Encouraging children to try international foods is about more than just expanding their palate. It’s an opportunity to develop healthy eating habits, strengthen connections and inspire cultural curiosity.
Trying dishes from around the world introduces children to new ingredients, flavors and cooking styles that can contribute to a more balanced and nutritious diet. Foods from different cultures often emphasize the use of fresh vegetables, grains, legumes and proteins – for example, Mediterranean meals are rich in olive oil and fish, Japanese cuisine highlights portion control and seasonal produce, and South-Asian dishes feature lots of anti-inflammatory spices. By enjoying meals from different countries at an early age, children become familiar with a wide range of fresh foods which support their growth and development through varied nutrients.

Aside from the physical benefits, there is huge social and emotional value in sharing meals. Sitting down together, especially when trying something new, creates meaningful connection across friends and family. Cooking and eating international dishes together can spark conversations about culture, geography, and even history, turning mealtimes into both bonding experiences and learning opportunities.
The Healthy Living Platform hosts a weekly Community Cafe where, each week, a different menu of homemade global cuisines is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. The cafe brings the Lambeth community together to enjoy delicious, nutritious food whilst sharing great conversation!
